Meeting Minutes

Meeting Date: January 22, 2009
Time: 7:35 p.m.
Attendance: 28
Guests: Bob and Karen Hartney, Sandra Paul, Bill and Gloria Crowell.

Our first meeting of 2009 was brought to order by re-elected President, Donnie Nettles. The minutes were read by re-elected Secretary, Betty Nettles. The other elected Officers for 2009 are Treasurer, Donna Thompson (in her 2nd year of 3 year term) and Vice-President, Mary Shaw. The three new Executive Board Members for 2009 are Sue Stephens, Gopal Garg and Bill Snavely. Treasurer, Donna Thompson, gave the Treasurer’s Report.

Old Business:
Farmers Market – There was some discussion regarding coverage at the booth to make sure we have people to pour samples as well as talk to prospective members. Also, display tables and equipment. Donnie said he would take his equipment and a bubbling carboy. Tom Hull would offer a kit wine for display.

T-Shirts – Donna would like to take orders for shirts as the company likes more than one at a time. Please call her.

New Business:
Wine Fest – Betty Nettles presented the information in an email regarding the Wine Fest and Hotel. The Wine Fest is at a different location this year and found a Quality Inn less than 3 miles from the Event. A group rate on a block of 10 rooms for $79.95 (standard king or 2 queens). The Wine Fest is being held at Honey Horn Plantation on Hilton Head. The hotel has an Applebee’s attached with a 10% off meals for hotel guests.

Kathy Snavely announced she had 40 bottles for the taking.

The Secretary has made up a new calendar for 2009, based on the Executive Board Meeting assignments. Look for it on the website.

Website – Steve Parker is updating the website and look for new changes in that.

Strawberries – Betty Nettles asked if anyone would be interested in strawberries when they become cheaper, most likely late March or early April.

Bill Piastuch made a motion to close the meeting and Mark Stephens seconded.

Respectively submitted,

Betty Nettles, Secretary

February 2009

Meeting Date: February 26, 2009
Time: 7:45 p.m.
Attendance: 31
Guests: Bob Hartney

The meeting was brought to order at 7:45 p.m.

For Old Business:

Betty Nettles thanked all those who helped with the Farmers Market on January 31. We had 36 people sign interest forms and 2 of them joined as members that day. There were no attendees from the Farmers Market. Another email will be sent.

The picnic date had to be changed from April 25 to April 18 as there was a conflict for the Nettles. More discussion on the picnic in March. Don Reese will help cook burgers, dogs & sausages. Bill Piastuch graciously volunteered to coordinate the food.

Wine Fest:

All attendees should plan on an early start in order to be at Mitch and Rita Patterson’s home before 12:30. Rita has planned a low country boil for 38 people. We will then go to Shannon Winery in Sylvania, GA. From there we will head to our hotel in Hilton Head. Maps and directions were given to the Wine Festers.

Steve Parker announced that the new website is under construction and should be up and running soon.

New Business:

Sue Stephens, our coffee lady, wanted to know if there were any requests for coffee such as creamer, milk, flavored coffee, flavored creamer, etc. Use real coffee cups and she will run them through the dishwasher.

Snavely’s have more surplus bottles

Betty mentioned to keep the June competition in mind while making new wines.

Bill Piastuch made a motion to close the meeting and was seconded by Terri Johnson.

Old Business:

Picnic: Everyone who has tables and chairs should bring them. Majority agreed to start the picnic at 1:00 instead of 12:00.

Donnie spoke about our trip to Wine Fest at Hilton Head, SC. Our hotel was less than a mile from the festival, which was in a new, larger location. Everyone had a great time.

New Business:

Mary Shaw has several wine shipping boxes if anyone is interested. The Shaw’s also have many champagne bottles, if anyone is enthused enough to try champagne.

Andy Harrell made a motion to close the meeting and it was seconded by Tony Barone. We conducted the raffle and then listened to a very information presentation by Bill Snavely on wine regions of Italy. He focused on how to decipher the wine labels from Italy. Thanks Bill for another great program.

Meeting Minutes
April 2009

Meeting Date: April 23, 2009
Time: 7:45 p.m.
Guests: Chris Schumacher
Attendance: 20

Our meeting was brought to order with the reading of the March minutes and Treasurer’s report.

Old business:

President, Donnie Nettles, thanked everyone for coming to the annual picnic which was held at the Nettles home. Everyone who attended seemed to have a good time. The horseshoe tournament was especially fun as everyone could participate.

The May meeting will be our guest, Chef Bob, from BCC Culinary Instructor in Cocoa.

The website is up and running. Our guest, Chris Schumacher, actually found us by looking at the web site.

New Business:

Mark Stephens asked if anyone was interested in sending wines off to the NOWG Wine Competition in Ohio. Anyone interested should let us know and the shipping could be split for sending the wines. Entry is $10 per entrant (not per bottle)—very inexpensive. This club has at least two or more AWS Trained Judges.

Terri Johnson may approach the Rumples about a possible boat ride in the fall—possibly November since there will not be a meeting in November.

Mary Shaw mentioned they would be going on a Wine Cruise from a New Smyrna Reunion. They will report back to us if it is worthwhile for the club to take a similar cruise sometime.

Kreutzer Garman will be going to North Carolina for a month. If anyone is interested in buying Duplin wines, please contact Duplin Winery to order your wines with credit card number. Kreutzer will return to Florida on May 25, so place your order by May 20.

A motion to close the meeting was made by Mary Shaw, seconded by Bill Snavely.

Following our meeting was a demonstration done by Donnie and Betty Nettles with levels of acids and levels of sugar in a bland wine. The object was to put the acids and sugars in the order from lowest amount to the highest amount of acid and sugar. Although, we had a small group for this experiment, those who participated in January 2005 are now getting much better at detecting the levels.

Guests: Tyson Hoyman, Trish Skierski, Bill Fry, Bob and Maribeth Mittauer

The meeting began with the reading of minutes and treasurer’s reports.

Old Business:

The wine competition is still on schedule for the June meeting. We hope to have a good number of entries.

New Business:

The grape vineyards at Parkers, Piastuch’s and Shaws are all doing well, especially after the rain. All are looking forward to harvesting in mid-August.

The meeting was very brief to allow time for Chef Bob to demonstrate his treat for the night.—French Toast stuffed with strawberry cream and drizzled with a strawberry glaze.

Mary Shaw made a motion to close which was seconded by Gopal Garg.

Was it a dessert or a breakfast treat???! Either way it was tasty.
